                                              Tell Him It’s Jackie
                                                December 15 - 19

“…a fascinating exploration of the early life of Jackie Kennedy… Dugan does a wonderful job of presenting audiences with a side of her that few know about.”  Julia Stier - Medium

Actor/Playwright Tom Dugan’s new play, Tell Him It’s Jackie will have its premiere South Florida run from December 15th through December 19th at the Mizner Park Cultural Center in Boca Raton.  The play received rave reviews when it debuted in Los Angeles in Dugan’s own ‘Backyard Playhouse’ in 2020.

Kait Haire will portray former First Lady Jackie Kennedy in a powerful and revealing narrative as she receives word, on June 5th, 1968, of her brother-in-law Robert Kennedy’s assassination. Believing herself incapable of living through another great loss, Jackie decides on a course of action that will irrevocably change her future and that of her children.  Tell Him It’s Jackie is a fascinating exploration of the life of one of America’s – and the world’s most recognizable and beloved figures.

“The experience of working on Tell Him It’s Jackie has been wonderful,” Haire says. “Jackie is an American icon, and it is easy for people to forget she wasn’t just the poised, stylish woman she presented to the public. She had her breaking points, like we all do, and as an actor it has been great to get to explore those moments.”
Playwright Tom Dugan, well known for his award-winning performance as Simon Wiesenthal in his play Wiesenthal, dove deep into Jacqueline Kennedy’s life history in order to stay true to the woman portrayed in Tell Him It’s Jackie.

“I discovered new information that was only recently released to the public,” he says.  “And I came to understand that Jackie had a powerful sexuality she used to manipulate the media, the public, and the people in her life. Kait Haire has that same alluring charisma – her Jackie is compelling, real, and seductive.

“This play is a completely pandemic inspired production,” Dugan explains. “We rehearsed for a couple of months over Zoom which allowed us the time to really develop the character organically, and the play debuted in my own backyard!  Everyone – our tech crew, Kait, and I were COVID tested frequently (this was before the vaccine); and aside from when Kait was performing, we were all masked, as was our socially distant audience, which was limited to only 16 people.”

“Ms. Haire creates an impeccable Jackie; she looks like her, sounds like her, and moves like her.” – Theatre Notes
Tom Dugan (Playwright/ Director/Actor) has been honored with nominations for the New York Drama Desk Award, New York Outer Critics Circle Award, Los Angeles Ovation Award, and won the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for Wiesenthal (produced by Daryl Roth and directed by Jenny Sullivan). Wiesenthal has enjoyed productions in Israel, India, Australia, Italy, and Mexico. The script has been published by Bashert Books and is currently available on Amazon.

A feature film of Wiesenthal, produced by Dan Kaplow (The Haunting of Hill House, Joe Exotic) is now in the works. During the pandemic Tom, with the help of his family, created Dugan’s Backyard Playhouse, a socially distant outdoor live theatre where he premiered two of his plays Tell Him It’s Jackie (“brilliant and masterful” - Curtain Up) and The Ghosts Of Mary Lincoln (“Spellbinding” LA Times). Tom’s newest one-man show, Tevye in New York (“Magical” – LA Times), premiered at the Wallis Annenberg in Beverly Hills over the summer, and will begin touring next year. His newest piece, Cemetery Pub, will premiere in 2022.  Mr. Dugan’s Film/TV credits include Friends, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Dave, Kindergarten Cop, and Naked Gun.

AN EVENING WITH KEIKO MATSUI AT BOCA BLACK BOX

Location + Hours

On the morning of September 11, 2001, the townsfolk of Gander (including Claude the mayor, Oz the police constable, Beulah the teacher, Bonnie the SPCA worker and others) describe life in Newfoundland and how they learn of the terrorist attacks taking place in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania ("Welcome to the Rock").

The attacks result in US airspace being closed, forcing 38 international aircraft to be diverted and land unexpectedly at the Gander airport, doubling the population of the small Newfoundland town, which is unequipped for the influx of stranded travelers ("38 Planes"). The Gander townspeople spring to action and prepare to house, feed, clothe, and comfort the nearly 7,000 passengers (along with 19 animals in cargo) ("Blankets and Bedding"). Meanwhile, the pilots, flight attendants and passengers are initially not permitted to leave the planes, forcing them to deal with confusing and conflicting information about what has happened and why they were suddenly grounded ("28 Hours / Wherever We Are").

Once allowed off the planes and transferred to various emergency shelters in and around Gander ("Darkness and Trees"), the passengers and crew watch replays of the attacks on the news and learn the true reason why they were grounded ("Lead Us Out of the Night"). The frightened and lonely passengers desperately try to contact their families and pray for their loved ones, while the townsfolk work through the night to help them in any and every way they can ("Phoning Home / Costume Party"). The travelers are initially taken aback by their hosts' uncommon hospitality, but they slowly let their guards down and begin to bond with the quirky townsfolk and each other. The "islanders" in Gander and the surrounding towns open up their homes to the "plane people", regardless of their guests' race, nationality or sexual orientation. Two women, Beulah (from Gander) and Hannah (from New York), bond over the fact that both of their sons are firefighters, but Hannah's son is missing ("I Am Here"). Hannah asks Beulah to take her to a Catholic church, and a number of characters make their way to other houses of worship around town ("Prayer").

To alleviate rising fear and mounting tensions ("On The Edge"), the passengers are invited to be initiated as honorary Newfoundlanders at the local bar ("Heave Away / Screech In"). The gravity of the attacks nevertheless continues to set in as US airspace is eventually reopened. One trailblazing pilot, Beverley Bass, comments on how her once optimistic view of the world has suddenly changed ("Me and the Sky"). While one pair of passengers starts to develop a romance despite the terrible thing that brought them together ("Stop the World"), another pair sees their long-term relationship fall apart under the stress of the event.

As the passengers and crew fly away to their homes, they joyously exchange stories of the immense kindness and generosity that was shown to them by the Newfoundland strangers in their time of need ("Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere"), but not before a Muslim traveler, faced with increasing prejudice from his fellow passengers, undergoes a humiliating strip search prior to boarding. The townsfolk in Gander return to normal life, but comment on how empty their town now seems and how different the world now feels. The passengers and airline staff who return to the United States are faced with the horror of the attacks' aftermath—including Hannah, who learns that her firefighter son lost his life during the rescue efforts ("Something's Missing").

Ten years later, the crew and passengers (the "come from away") of the once stranded planes reunite in Gander, this time by choice, to celebrate the lifelong friendships and strong connections they formed in spite of the terrorist attacks ("Finale"). As Claude the mayor professes, "Tonight we honour what was lost, but we also commemorate what we found."

                                   Agatha Christie’s A Spider’s Web

                                 THE DELRAY BEACH PLAYHOUSE
                                     December 3, 2021 – 19, 2021

“Suspense, anyone? The old-fashioned kind? Who's for good, clean fun? One is Agatha Christie's 1954 puzzler,  A Spider's Web.”
                          - Howard Thompson, The New York Times

The Delray Beach Playhouse will open their season with a classic mystery.  Dame Agatha Christie’s A Spider’s Web, a unique blend of suspense and humor, will open at the Playhouse on December 3rd, and run through December 19th.

Agatha Christie famously wrote the longest-running play in the history of the English-speaking theatre - The Mousetrap, now in its 69th year in London’s West End. Her second longest-running success is an intricately plotted mystery with comedic overtones which involves discovering a hidden treasure of unsuspected value, a young girl’s fascination with witchcraft and a hostess who must keep a murder from interfering with an important diplomatic conference.

After Clarissa Brown convinces her husband, a Foreign Office diplomat, and his two colleagues to help her hide a murdered body, the conference begins. But it is soon interrupted by the arrival of the police, who have been summoned by a mysterious call. To her chagrin, when Clarissa tries to lead the police to the body, it has disappeared. Usually adept at spinning tales of adventure to amuse her husband’s colleagues, Clarissa learns that facts can be far more terrifying than fiction.

A conscious parody of the detective thriller, Christie delivers a unique blend of suspense and humor. There is tension and laughter in equal parts in an intricate plot of murder, police, drug addicts, invisible ink, hidden doorways and secret drawers.
A Spider’s Web will be directed by Randolph (Randy) DelLago, and features Marci Hall as Clarissa Hailsham-Brown, Ken Vianale as Henry Hailsham-Brown, Mark Liebert as Sir Rowland Delahaye, Neal Evangelista as Hugo Birch, Marissa Shala as Pippa Hailsham-Brown, Tom Gregory as Jeremy Warrender, Colin Elias as Oliver Costello, Tom Turner as Elgin, Michael Beecher as Inspector Lord, and Dean Christopoul as Constable Jones.

A Spider’s Web’s Stage Manager is Doug Moore, and the show’s Technical Director is Andre Lancaster.  Scenic Design is by Ann Cadaret and Cindi Taylor, and Scenic Art is by Cindi Taylor.  Lighting is by Sonia Buchanan, Properties by Susan Rose, and the production’s Master Carpenter is Jeff Davis.

A Spider’s Web will run from December 3 – 19 at the Delray Beach Playhouse.  Tickets are $38 and can be purchased online at
delraybeachplayhouse.com, or by phone at 561-272-1281.The Delray Beach Playhouse is located at 950 NW 9th Street, in Delray Beach 33444.
