About Martin Sexton: Widely considered a “musician’s musician,” Sexton started as a street performer in Boston before winning the Artist of the Year Award in 1994 from the National Academy of Songwriters.

He has released nearly a dozen albums, including among others Black Sheep (1996), The  American  (1998), Wonder Bar (2000), Seeds (2007), Sugarcoating (2010) and Mixtape of the Open Road (2015), a musical cross-country trip, blazing through all territories of style, a charm bracelet of 12 gems all strung together with the golden thread of what Rolling Stone calls a “soul marinated voice that can easily be compared to the likes of a young Steve Winwood or Van Morrison.”

The New York Times praised Sexton for his unpretentious ability “to amplify the sound of the ordinary heart,” while Billboard calls him “the real thing, people, a star with potential to permanently affect the musical landscape and keep us entertained for years to come.” Dave Matthews says Sexton is “one of my favorite singers and songwriters,” and John Mayer gushes, “I may just quit my job and go follow Martin and make a fuss everywhere I go, just to make sure that people don’t go their lives without hearing this man sing to them.”

                                     DANCE NOW MIAMI RETURNS TO

THE BROWARD CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
                                     WITH TWO WORLD PREMIERES
Program III also features the recreation of José Limón's iconic La Malinche

Dance NOW! Miami (DNM) returns to the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts with Program III on Saturday, May 15 at 8 p.m. One of the leading contemporary companies in Florida, the troupe will present the world premieres of Dorian's Reflection, inspired by the classic Oscar Wilde novel, and the Jewish-themed Anusim. The program also features the company's reconstruction of dance great José Limón's iconic La Malinche, as part of their annual Masterpiece In Motion series.

Dorian's Reflection, choreographed by DNM Artistic Co-Directors Hannah Baumgarten and Diego Salterini, is a contemporary treatment of the story and characters from Wilde's novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, a foundational part of the gay literary canon. The ballet, with an original score by internationally recognized composer Davidson Jaconello, explores the themes of fear, loneliness, loss, and moral deterioration, embodied in Dorian, who remains forever young while his portrait ages instead. The dance work updates the narrative to our modern time of selfies and social media, plastic surgery, Tinder and Grinder, flipping the story so that Dorian's projected image stays young while the character of Dorian ages.

"In our youth-obsessed culture, Wilde's novel really still speaks to us, and inspired us to create a piece that looks at today's tendency towards self-absorption and indulgence," says Salterini. The other world premiere on the program, Anusim, what is hidden is never lost, is also a Baumgarten and Salterini collaboration. It is inspired by the 1497 decree in Portugal forcing all Jews to be baptized as "New Christians," but allowing them to practice their own religion in secret. It will travel with the company in June when they go on tour to Portugal.

La Malinche, which fills out the evening, is the first piece José Limón choreographed for his own company in 1947. It is based on the real life story of an indigenous Nahua woman who played a key role in the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, and is a legendary character in Mexican cultural history. The piece is reconstructed on DNM by Daniel Lewis, Limón's protégé and former Artistic Director of the Limon Dance Company after the founder's death, well known in South Florida as the Founding Dean of the Dance Department of New World School of the Arts. La Malinche is presented in collaboration with the José Limón Foundation and the 75th anniversary of the Limón Company.

The Dance NOW! 2020/21 season continues with On-Stage With Italy's Opus Ballet at Miami Theater Center on June 19 and Dance NOW! On Tour in Portugal June 20-27.

Seating at this event allows for six feet of physical distance and tickets are only available in groups of two for patron safety.  Health and safety guidelines will be followed and are available at BrowardCenter.org under the Visit tab.

Tickets are $40 reserved seating with student tickets prices at $15 students. Tickets are available online at
BrowardCenter.org and Ticketmaster.com, the only official ticketing service of the Broward Center.  Ticket sales benefit the Broward Center’s Road to Recovery Fund to support operations as the Center prepares for the day when the doors reopen, the curtain rises and the lights return to the Broward Center Stages.

RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL AND THE COLOSSEUM AT CAESARS PALACE

Voting by the public for the Pollstar award is open now through May 14

Venue iPollstar, an industry leader in live entertainment, has nominated the Broward Center for the Performing Arts for the “Theatre of the Decade Award.” Voting is open to the general public now through May 14 at 32nd Annual Pollstar Awards Fan Voting Ballot Survey.

The only venue in Florida to be nominated, the Broward Center is vying for the honor alongside Radio City Music Hall and the Beacon Theatre in New York City, the Colosseum At Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, Chicago Theatre, Durham Performing Arts Center and the Auditorio Nacional and Auditorio Telmex in Mexico.

The Broward Center was recognized by Pollstar as one of the top ten venues of its size in the world for the ninth consecutive year in 2019, the most recent award year. A statement by Pollstar noted, “With COVID-19 bringing a halt to traditional live events, resulting in a dearth of major tours, festivals, venue activity and touring-based artist development, Pollstar is dedicating the 32nd Annual Pollstar Awards to celebrating the most commercially and artistically successful artists, venues and events over the last decade, as determined by Pollstar’s box office data and prior awards voting history.”

“The entire organization, from top to bottom, has contributed to this nomination. I could not be more proud of the work of our team and the honor of receiving this nomination. It is recognition that the exceptional work of everyone behind the scenes is truly world class. Even during the most challenging period in our history during the pandemic, we delivered relevant programs to our audiences to engage them in the arts and stay connected,” said Broward Center President and CEO Kelley Shanley. “I want to thank our staff, loyal audiences and everyone who has bought tickets, taken classes or contributed to our Road to Recovery Fund as we work to raise the curtain again. And, of course, I encourage everyone to vote for us.”

With nominees chosen by Pollstar’s research and editorial staff, the “Theatre of the Decade Award” celebrates the theater that showcased superior talent booking, effective promotion, quality production values and staff, an exemplary experience for fans and artists and consistent box office success over the last decade.

As the pandemic shut down the theaters, the Broward Center pivoted to online and virtual offerings that continue to engage, inspire and connect through the arts. BrowardCenter@Home  and Education@Home experiences have included Broadway Chats featuring live, online interviews with performing artists; virtual summer theater camps, Broadway intensives and online arts experiences for special needs audiences. More recently, the Broward Center has partnered with Cleveland Clinic, which is providing the medical expertise and guidance to ensure that it develops and implements effective health & safety protocols, to offer live performing arts experiences including outdoor events in the Peck Courtyard and the premiere of Backlot Live! that literally brings audiences to the stage door as they enter the Lillian S. Wells Backstage Plaza to enjoy music, comedy and other events outdoors and under the stars.

The 32nd Annual Pollstar Awards will recognize artists, venues, and individuals who rose to the occasion during the shutdown through streaming of live events, alternative delivery of live performances, philanthropy and innovation. Voters are encouraged to skip voting in any category for which they might lack the proper perspective. The voting deadline is Friday, May 14 at 5 p.m.

The winners will be announced at the the Pollstar Live! Conference at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Wednesday, June 16, 2021.
